Visiting a Mobility Showroom: What to Expect and Why It Can Help

Choosing mobility equipment can be difficult when you are relying on photographs, measurements and product specifications alone. Whether you are considering a mobility scooter, wheelchair, walking aid or specialist seating, seeing equipment in person can make it much easier to understand what feels right for you.

Visiting a mobility showroom gives you the opportunity to compare different options, ask questions and get a better idea of how equipment might fit into everyday life.

At Classic Mobility, our mobility showroom is located in Hertford, where our team can help customers and their families explore mobility equipment and discuss their individual requirements.

Why Visit a Mobility Showroom Before Buying?

Mobility equipment can be a significant purchase, and suitability is often about much more than a list of specifications.

A mobility scooter might have the range you need on paper, for example, but you may also want to know how comfortable the seat feels, whether the controls are easy to operate and how confident you feel manoeuvring it.

The same applies to wheelchairs, walking aids and seating. Dimensions and product descriptions are useful, but seeing equipment in person can give you a much better understanding of its size, comfort and practicality.

A showroom also gives you the opportunity to ask questions before making a decision rather than trying to work everything out from an online product description.

What Can You Find in a Mobility Showroom?

The equipment available will vary between mobility showrooms, but at Classic Mobility we provide a broad range of products designed to support mobility, comfort and independence.

Our product range includes wheelchairs, mobility scooters, walking aids and specialist seating, alongside equipment for sleeping, toileting and bathing, and moving and handling.

Visiting a showroom can be particularly useful if you are not yet certain which product or type of equipment would be most appropriate. Rather than beginning with a specific model in mind, you can start with what you need the equipment to help you achieve.

For example, someone looking for a mobility scooter may need something suitable for regular outdoor journeys, while another person may prioritise manoeuvrability, transport or storage. A wheelchair user may have very different requirements depending on whether the chair is intended for occasional trips or more regular use.

What Should You Consider Before Visiting a Mobility Showroom?

Before visiting, it can help to think about where and how the equipment will actually be used.

For mobility scooters and wheelchairs, consider the types of journeys you make, the surfaces you regularly travel over and whether the equipment will need to fit inside a car. Storage at home can also be important, particularly with larger mobility equipment.

If you are choosing equipment for use around the home, doorway widths, available space and the layout of the property may all influence which options are practical.

Comfort and ease of use are equally important. Think about whether the equipment will be operated independently or with help from a family member or carer, and whether there are any particular features that would make everyday use easier.

You do not necessarily need to know exactly what you are looking for before visiting. Understanding the problem you want to solve is often a much better starting point.

Questions Worth Asking When Choosing Mobility Equipment

A mobility showroom is also an opportunity to look beyond the initial purchase.

It is worth asking about how equipment should be maintained, whether replacement parts are readily available and what servicing or repairs may be required over its lifetime.

You may also want to ask about adjustments, accessories and whether equipment can be adapted if your requirements change.

For larger purchases such as mobility scooters, powered wheelchairs or specialist seating, understanding the aftercare available can be just as important as choosing the equipment itself.

At Classic Mobility, we provide servicing, maintenance and repairs for a range of mobility equipment, helping customers continue to use their equipment safely and reliably after purchase.

The Benefits of Trying Mobility Equipment in Person

There is no substitute for experiencing mobility equipment for yourself.

Something that looks ideal online may feel very different once you sit in it, operate the controls or try to manoeuvre it. Equally, a product you had not initially considered may turn out to suit your requirements better.

Trying equipment can help you consider practical questions such as:

  • Is the seat comfortable?
  • Are the controls easy to reach and operate?
  • Can the equipment be manoeuvred comfortably?
  • Is it easy to get on and off or transfer in and out?
  • Does the size feel appropriate for where it will be used?
  • Would it be practical to transport or store?

If a family member or carer will regularly help with the equipment, it can also be useful for them to understand how it works and how practical it will be to manage.

Buying Mobility Equipment Is About More Than the Product

The right mobility equipment should support the way you actually live.

That is why we believe choosing equipment should involve looking at the wider picture rather than simply comparing prices or technical specifications.

Your home, regular journeys, transport, level of independence and the support available from family members or carers can all influence which solution is most suitable.

Aftercare should also form part of that decision. Knowing where to turn if equipment requires maintenance or repair can provide additional reassurance, particularly for something you depend on regularly.

Classic Mobility is a family-run mobility specialist and has been supporting customers since 1995. From our Hertford showroom, we provide mobility equipment alongside ongoing servicing, repairs and aftercare.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I try mobility equipment before buying it?

Trying mobility equipment before making a decision can help you assess comfort, size, controls and general ease of use. For larger or more specialised equipment, a demonstration can be particularly useful before deciding which option is most suitable.

What should I consider when choosing a mobility scooter?

Consider where you intend to use the scooter, the distances you expect to travel, storage, transportation, comfort and manoeuvrability. Your individual mobility requirements should also influence the type and size of scooter you choose.

What should I bring when visiting a mobility showroom?

It can help to bring measurements or information relevant to where the equipment will be used, particularly if space or transportation is a concern. You may also want to make a note of any specific requirements or questions you would like to discuss.

Can someone come with me to a mobility showroom?

Having a family member or carer with you can be useful, particularly if they will help operate, transport or maintain the equipment. They can also help you compare options and consider how the equipment will work in everyday situations.

I hired a mobility scooter whilst down in Hertford visiting family from CM. This fantastic service enabled me and my family to explore part's of the area I would not have been able to before. I look forward to using this service again and for longer.
The staff were brilliant aswell, explaining the functions of the scooter clearly to me.
Thank you very much CM

6weeks ago I contacted CM, in desperate need of a wheelchair for my father who was non mobile following a very quick decline in his illness, it was answered by an extremely helpful and understanding young man, he told me if I arrived at CM the following morning at 8.30am I could pick up a wheelchair for my father. (As it was no longer considered suitable for hire) .but for my father it was a lifeline.
I was eternally thankful for his act of kindness and I have repeated this to so many people. As an example of goodwill and kindness.
My father sadly passed away last week and so I have since returned it to CM, where I understand they are now donating it to Isabel hospice, another very kind gesture.
I met another member of their staff when returning and she was also very helpful.
I cannot recommend this business enough.
Top mates to CM.

Helpful, knowledgeable staff. Good range of equipment. Small niggle: if you are selling disability equipment there should be a slope on to the road.

Their friendly team were really supportive when I went into their Hertford showroom to enquire about mobility aids for myself. Being in my 30's I was conscious that I may be younger than their usual customer but they couldn't have been more accommodating or knowledgeable. Thank you.
